Childhood in the textile factory

How Britain was industrialised during the 19th century

In my childhood I experienced a change in the place where I worked. Before I worked in the factory I was an artisan with all my family. We made some products in a very small workshop. We made all these objects by hand until the country became industrialised in the late 18th century. Because of this, all this poor workshops disappeared and they were replaced by factories.

Also, the machines were introduced to the lives of the people. Those first machines were powered by hydraulic energy but, after a time,  we started to make machines powered by the steam engine (coal is used as the main source of energy).

Williamson Co. is the company where we work. These name comes from my father and all his family. When my father died he will let me take control of the factory.

Now I am working in that factory. Yes, a child is working!. The work in the factory is very hard and I am treated like a slave. I am working from sun to sun and I am not receiving any type of money or pay for the labour I do in the factory.

But I am not the only one receiving that treatments. Women are suffering the same as I am. I have reached the point where I can see various pregnant women working in the factory and in the dirtiest of the works.

Also the citizens living outside the building suffer the consequences it produces. The factories make cities dirtier and this, as a result, could cause some serious illness or disease...

Now I am living in the factory with all my family. I don’t remember how the city or even the citizens… look like. I hope this horrible nightmare ends sooner rather than later. I want to enjoy my childhood, not to disgust it.
